Today, I want to share a personal story that led me to a profound realization about self-worth. Let's dive in and explore this essential aspect of our lives together.
An Eye-Opening Experience in New York City
A little while ago, I attended an event in New York City. One of the highlights for me was the chance to meet Heather Monahan, a speaker and author who has been a significant influence on my journey as an artist. After years of interacting online, I felt like I already knew her—almost like we were friends.
But when I introduced myself at the event, she didn't recognize me. Despite her kindness, I was overwhelmed by unexpected anxiety and a sense of unease. Even after she kindly invited me for a photo, these feelings lingered. It wasn't until later that I realized this encounter had brought my deep-seated insecurities about self-worth to the surface. In that moment I felt unworthy- unworthy to be seen and remembered.
What is Self-Worth?
Self-worth is the intrinsic belief that you are valuable simply because you exist. As children, we naturally feel worthy, but life's experiences and interactions can erode this belief over time. Self-worth is the foundation for several related concepts:
Self-Value: Recognizing the unique contributions you bring to the world, your relationships, and your life.
Self-Esteem: How you perceive yourself, including your appearance and how you think others perceive you.
Self-Confidence: The belief in your ability to accomplish tasks and handle challenges.
Why Self-Worth is Crucial
Often, feelings of inadequacy, fear of failure, and reluctance to change stem from a lack of self-worth. By addressing and nurturing your self-worth, you can significantly enhance your self-esteem, self-value, and self-confidence.
How to Assess Your Self-Worth
Understanding where you stand with your self-worth is crucial. Here's a simple exercise to help you gauge it:
Reflect Honestly: Think about your current self, not your past or future self. Be brutally honest with yourself.
Rate Yourself: On a scale from 0 (not at all) to 10 (completely), rate yourself on statements like: Avoid rating yourself a 5; this exercise aims to push you out of neutrality.
I believe in myself.
I feel as valuable as others.
I am proud of my accomplishments.
I handle criticism well.
I recognize my positive qualities.
Analyze and Act: For any low scores, consider what mindset shifts or actions could help you improve by one notch. Focus on small, incremental steps rather than overwhelming changes.
Embracing Your Worth
By understanding and improving your self-worth, you lay the groundwork for a more confident and fulfilling life. Remember, you are inherently valuable. Embrace your worth and let it shine through in everything you do.
Take a moment to reflect on your self-worth and remember, you are worthy simply because you exist.
Cheers to showing up like the masterpiece you are!
